>> Hi I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET dot com. Today I'll take a first look at the Samsung Rugby, also called the GH-A837. Although this phone is for AT and T, reminds me a little of a Nextel phone in the sense that it has push to talk, has a durable rugged design, it does have a pretty thick skin all around, it is certified for military specifications for wind, dust, rain, temperature extremes, solar radiation, and things like that. On the outside you'll see there is an outside speaker, this is of course used for the push to talk and the speakerphone. The external display is a little bit small but it shows all the information you need. Camera lens if right down here, there is no flash. Here on the back the battery cover does have a locking mechanism, you have to twist it up to take the battery cover off. Inside, the phone has a pretty nice display, it a little small I thought for the overall size of the phone, but it's bright and colorful. Menus are easy to use, pictures show up well, graphics look good. The navigation controls and keypad, little bit of a mixed bag I thought, my finger kept going down to the clear key and was backing out of the menu so ... personally I didn't really love it but pick it up in the AT and T store and use it and see how it feels for you. There's also a dedicated button for the GPS, keypad buttons were fine, found it pretty spacious. Inside the phone is personal organizer features, it has Bluetooth, it has a speaker phone, that push to talk capability that I talked about. Overall pretty descent phone, definitely packed with features, rugged user friendly design, call quality - I thought the speaker, especially inside, vibrated just a bit and it distorted the voices; not a huge deal but definitely noticeable. I'm Kent German and this is the Samsung Rugby GH-A837. [ music ]
The good: The Samsung Rugby SGH-A837 has a durable, easy-to-use design with an excellent feature set that includes 3G support, push-to-talk, and GPS. Photo quality is excellent.
The bad: The Samsung Rugby SGH-A837's call quality was a bit uneven and streaming-video quality was disappointing. Also, it uses a proprietary headset jack and it lacks voice dialing.
The bottom line: The Samsung Rugby SGH-A837's could use a few improvements, but it remains a solid choice for a rugged, straight-forward phone with a loaded feature set.
