Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's August 6, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. It's quite the momentous day, actually. On this date in 1932, Germany opened the first Autobahn between Cologne and Bonn. I have GOT to go for a drive on one of those. In terrible technology use, it was today in 1945 that the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, effectively ending World War II. And ... big news! On this date in 1991, the first Web page went online! Tim Berners-Lee built it at CERN, using hypertext in combination with the Transmission Control Protocol and domain name system ... and creating the World Wide Web. The first site explained what the World Wide Web was, how to get a browser, and how to set up a Web server. It also served as the world's first Web directory, because Tim Berners-Lee kept a list there of other Web sites as they were built. You've got a lot to thank Tim for. Like, for this show.
