>> Hi, I'm Jasmine France, senior associated editor for www.cnet.com.
>> I'm here today with the Iriver L player. Now, as you can see, this kind of looks like a miniature version of the first Iriver clixs [assumed spelling], I actually like to think it's the offspring of the clixs in the S10, which was a really small pendant style player. Ultra compact uses the same D-click interface, which means you click around the edges of the screen to activate the controls. You have some soft keys on the screen that tell you what does what. You have some dedicated controls as well, which does come in handy. You have a power button on the bottom, as well as dedicated volume rocker. Over here on the side there is a mini USB port for synching [assumed spelling], as well as a standard 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. Now, this player is priced a lot more fairly then a lot of Iriver players out the gate. You can get a 4-gigabyte version for about 110, or a 8-gigabyte version for around 160. You can also choose from three color variations, black, white, or light pink. Like most Iriver players, this player comes packed with features. You have photo and video playback. You also have audio playback, MP3, WMA, OGG Vorbis [assumed spelling] even FLAC. You also see get the subscription support with Rhapsody and Napster and the like. There's an FM radio with autoscan and presets, as well as a built in mike [assumed spelling] for making voice recordings. And finally you have a text viewer on here. So it's a very feature pack player, if you're looking for something that's ultra compact that'll fit in just about any pocket that, it comes with a lot of features, and a really nifty design, then the Iriver L player could be just what you're after.

The good: The Iriver LPlayer is packed with features, including an FM radio, voice recording, bookmarking, subscription music support, multiple sound-enhancement options, and support for both Mac and Windows. It also offers an ultracompact design with a nice, bright color display.
The bad: The LPlayer's buttons aren't always responsive, and our test unit came with a bug that caused album names to be displayed in a foreign language. Videos must be transferred through software, and the rated battery life is not great.
The bottom line: The Iriver LPlayer is a pint-size version of the well-received Clix. You get most of the same features in a smaller package offered at a pared-down price point.
