Adobe Acrobat 9 beta Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Elsa Wenzel, associate editor with CNET. *** Adobe is taking an online leap with its release of Acrobat 9 software. *** Acrobat, used mostly by businesses to create print-ready PDF documents, will now integrate Flash animation within PDFs. *** In addition, Acrobat 9 is being paired with new, online tools including ConnectNow video conferencing and the Buzzword word processor at Acrobat.com. Acrobat.com comes with 5 GB of storage. *** Now users of the free Acrobat Reader will be able to view videos, animation, and even applications embedded within documents in the PDF, or Portable Document Format. That would eliminate the need to open a third-party media player, enriching the capabilities of PDFs. *** In addition, business users who rely on Adobe Acrobat are getting new tools to manage complex PDF packages and to enhance the power of interactive forms. Enhanced security features include more control over redactions and the option to beef up PDFs with 256-bit encryption, used by online banks. *** Acrobat 9 ranges in price from $299 for Standard to $449 for Pro to $699 for Pro Extended. The priciest edition includes geospatial mapping as well as Adobe Presenter, which ties into Microsoft PowerPoint. *** That was an early look at Adobe Acrobat 9.

The good: Adobe Acrobat 9 wraps video and animation into PDFs; supports geospatial mapping and 3D images; enhances 256-bit encryption; improves form management and redaction; takes Web page snapshots; PDF Portfolios better bundle complex packages; free online tie-ins extend the tools and allow remote collaboration.

The bad: Adobe Acrobat 9 isn't a cinch to master; tech support is pricey; PowerPoint tie-ins and geospatial mapping are only available in Pro Extended.

The bottom line: This update should be worthwhile for security-minded businesses and creative firms. With Acrobat 9, Adobe brings new Web relevance to print-ready PDFs by enabling embedded video and animation. Forms, security, and overall ease of use are also enhanced.
