>> Randall Bennett: I'm Randall Bennett for CNET.com and this is Ask Anything where there is no stupid questions. Matthew Moscovciak joins us to answer a kind of complex question. See if I can break it down for you. What is Upscaling DVD player?

>> Matthew Moscovciak: Sure well an upscaling DVD player it takes your DVDs and it converts it into a resolution that is a little bit more friendly for your HDTV.

>> Randall Bennett: So, if we have one of these giant TV's like we have behind you they'll try and scale it up and this will make the quality look a little better?

>> Matthew Moscovciak: Right exactly. Now its not going to look as good as a blue ray disk which you know you'll see some promotional material that says its going to make your DVDs look like HD, it wont do that. But you are going to see a little bit of an improvement and it depends on already how low your DV or your HDTV does upscaling.

>> Randall Bennett: Got it. So its kind of a combination of factors not just the DV player and its not just the HDTV its kind of how they work together.

>> Matthew Moscovciak: Exactly.

>> Randall Bennett: Okay. So the question is how much more of a premium are you going to pay for an upscaling DVD player?

>> Matthew Moscovciak: Right now, it depends you can probably get an upscaling DVD player for you know 90 bucks now, but they go all the way up to a $300, $400.

>> Randall Bennett: So why do you spend the price of like a PS3,4 an upscale DVD player is it going to make it look that much better or is it more just kind of promotional hype?

>> Matthew Moscovciak: It depends on how much you value the video quality of your standard FDVDs. I guess it can make sense if you already have a huge DVD library. There is a lot of movies that you cant get on Blue ray right now, so you could invest in that. However on the other hand if you are really about video quality and you want the best HD images it makes sense to get a PS3 because it upscales pretty well and blue ray blows DVD out of the water.

>> Randall Bennett: You guys play games on it too, right?

>> Matthew Moscovciak: Yeah

>> Randall Bennett: All right Matthew, thanks for joining us. I am Randall Bennett for CNET.com. ^M00:01:43 [ Music ]
