>> Hi, I'm Kevin Massey from CNET Cal-Tech, and today we're taking a first look at the Alpine IDA X double O one. Now this is a standard size in-car stereo that was designed by Alpine, with help from Apple. This unit will work with most iPods, most modern iPods. But the major benefits are to be had with fifth generation iPods, like the iPod video we have connected here. The difference between this unit and ones we've seen before is that this uses an all digital connection from the iPod to the car stereo. If we dive in here, we can see that this faceplate has a very simple layout, some, six buttons on the side, a jog wheel in the center, and a crisply rendered LCD screen on the right hand side. This jog wheel, just like the wheel on the front of an iPod allows you to switch between different categories to select your music. The screen shows what's playing, and it also shows with fifth generation iPods connected, the album art of whatever song or artist is playing. Another couple of features are that it can be used to play music stored on generic USB mass storage devices, just plug it in and play whatever music files are on there. The system can also be used to play HD radio, satellite radio, and used as a Bluetooth hands-free calling device all via add-on modules that are sold separately. [ background music ] This unit is an innovative in-car solution for the digital music age, and it's on sale now for about four hundred dollars. I'm Kevin Massey, and today we've had a first look at the Alpine IDA X double oh one. ^M00:01:47 [ music ]
The good: The Alpine iDA-X001 is an innovative in-car device for those who want to take their iPods on the road. Its digital USB connection enables playback of compressed and lossless files, while its well-designed menu system is intuitive and easy to understand.
The bad: For a system that claims to deliver "the best in-vehicle iPod experience ever," we found the iDA-X001's jog wheel to be slower and less effective at navigating digital audio libraries than we would have liked.
The bottom line: The made-for-iPod Alpine iDA-X001 is a useful interface for bringing a digital-music library on the road. We like its stylish design and breadth of functions, although its user interface falls behind that of the iPod itself.
