>> Boy, a whole new look on the outside but most importantly, a whole new payload of tech on the inside. Let's check out the new Lancer GTS. ^M00:00:07 [ music ] ^M00:00:12 Now when I talk to you about a Mitsubishi Lancer and it's not an Eva, there's not usually a big high tech story there. But with this new GTS, there kinda is. This head unit is very interesting. Let's start with the nav screen we've got up there right now. Ah, it's about a 7 inch wide screen, touch screen by the way which I love and a lot of big dollar cars out there would do well to give their vehicles touch screen. This one definitely has it and I find it's rather easy to navigate. I like the fact that it uses a Cordy keyboard and you have of course the touch ability and you've got predictive text. All those things add up to a very rapid data entry, at least for me. The screen resolution by the way, I think is really good. I mean it's not class leading, we're not talking about this being a Lexus or a BMW, but that's a pretty good looking display for a car in this price category and I also like how when you have a Blue Tooth phone paired, it always leaves a phone icon up here for an easy way to get to the phone mode. But let's move on to what's really interesting on this car, the entertainment system. Now as you see here, it's Rockford Fozzgate [assumed spelling] branded. Let's get into it. When you go to the audio modes, you've got a variety of choices. There's AM and FM, that's not too interesting. There's Sirius, okay got it. Sat radio, I've heard of that before. What the? Music server? Let's hit that one. This car you see, has a 30 gig hard drive. User addressable. You can rip your audio cd's to the library. That's a very unusual feature on cars, even at this point in 2007. This is an in car iPod. I like it. Now let's talk more about how that stuff gets in there. You hit the magic button over here on the left and that reveals the cd slot. There it is up there on the top, down below is the hard drive that holds that navigation data and of course the music as well. The logos here tell us we can bring in WMA or MP3 disks, as well as of course cd audio and check that out, dvd video. Yes, you can watch movies on this thing and believe it or not, you don't have to have this car locked in park to get a movie to display. It looks as though the traffic safety police haven't gotten to Mitsubishi yet. Now that's a single disk cd slot by the way, but who cares. You've got a hard drive to rip to, plus you can play MP3 and WMA disks. I'm not too concerned about that. This scared me for a minute. I looked down here and said don't tell me, they put the aux input jack on the bottom of the screen. So I've gotta have it up to use the aux. But you don't. I'm not sure what that jack is, but the aux, follow me is down here behind a door and you've got a set of RCA's. What I like about that is, the position is good, you can lose your player down there, but also notice the yellow jack. You can hook up a video portable to this and that'll come up on the screen as well. A nice touch. Now all this audio gets pumped out through that Rockford Fozzgate system as I mentioned. You've got speakers around the car, but the one I really noticed is the sub in the trunk. Good grief. That thing's huge. And just to make sure it gets plenty of due, check out this control. Bass, treble, faded, mid, punch level. I love that. So you can really drive some bump out of the back end of this car. The other audio option on this car is of course Blue Tooth hands free, which in a car of this price class, sometimes it not there. So I'm glad it's on the option sheet. It's affordable, as I mentioned, the icon here on the nav screen gets you to it. I found the audio quality in brief testing was staticky. Didn't work really well in that respect and I also had a lot of lag in getting it to pick up or drop a call. But we haven't tested it with more than just my 700P. So that might just be a single instance. Now our car doesn't have the most interesting power train on earth. There will be hotter versions of this car coming, but at this early launch point, it's got a 2 liter in line 4 with Mitsubishi's Myvech [assumed spelling] variable valve timing. You get about 152 horse, 140 some odd foot pounds. Let's price out this new Lancer GTS. Now as I mentioned, it's not a pricey car. Base on this guy is 18,115 and that includes destination. Now, to get the navigation, the music server and the cd/dvd player that's 2000 dollar more, then to add in the Rockford Fozzgate audio, 6 disk changer, Sirius, aux jack and glass sun roof, that's 1500 more, 250 for Blue Tooth, all in about 22 grand. Not bad. ^M00:04:15 [ music ]

The good: The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS is among the most tech-equipped cars available at its price, offering touch screen navigation, Bluetooth, and a 650-watt audio system with a 30GB hard drive.

The bad: Lots of guy-racer styling add-ons aren't backed up with much actual performance. Torque steer mars the otherwise entertaining front-drive handling.

The bottom line: While the new Lancer GTS boasts amenities not seen on other cars in its class, a powerful engine isn't one of them. But if rally car looks, nice tech options, and a booming stereo are more your speed, this Mitsubishi is an excellent choice.
