>> Hi, I'm David Katzmaier, Senior Editor from CNET.com and I'm with the Panasonic TH42PX77U. This is a 42 inch flat panel plasma television. Panasonic's latest. This flat panel screen is actually coated with an anti-glare compound that unlike a lot of plasma screens, doesn't really reflect that much ambient light. It actually does a really good job of toning down the reflections in the room. In terms of design, Panasonic went with the speakers on the sides of the panel this time so the set is a little bit wider than a lot of the flat panels out there. It makes for a wide, slightly shorter profile here. The stand is included. There's also a glossy frame around the screen and the speakers themselves are micro-perforated so they really don't look like speakers at all. They're kind of just strips of plastic to the side here. On back you'll find only two HGMI inputs and two component video inputs. If you do wanna connect a computer to your television, this is probably not the perfect set for that. It's also a good selection of color temperature settings. When it came time to check out the picture quality on the Panasonic, we were mostly pleased by what we saw. That anti-glare coating on the screen does make reflections a little bit blurry, but the picture itself is very sharp. It doesn't have any adverse effect on the picture quality. The set does deliver those nice deep blacks we've come to expect from Panasonic plasma's, meaning that the darker parts of the picture are actually very dark opposed to a lot of the other plasma's out there. It also delivers very nice detail in the shadows. So you can see plenty of those difficult to see kind of areas in dark pictures. On the flip side, the color not quite as accurate as we've seen on some plasma's, but again that's a little bit of a nitpick. It also delivered slightly more video noise and a little bit of false contouring. But overall, the picture quality is very good. The good: Antiglare screen reduces reflections; produces deep blacks with excellent shadow detail; accurate initial color temperature; slick styling.
The bad: Some false contouring; inaccurate primary color of green; nonuniversal remote; no PC input; no user-menu fine color temperature adjustments.
The bottom line: With its antiglare screen, the good-performing Panasonic TH-42PX77U plasma is as at home in brightly lit rooms as any LCD.
