It looks like T-Mobile customers trying to get one of the initial models of the first phones powered by Google's Android operating system will have to wait a bit longer.

"Sorry! Due to the overwhelming popularity of the new T-Mobile G1, upgrades are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later," the T-Mobile pre-order page told people who tried to sign up for the phone on Saturday, according to the Android Guys blog.

The G1 phone, built by HTC, was announced Tuesday and goes on sale October 22. The price is $179.99 for those who sign up for a two-year contract with T-Moble.

Oh and before some iHype 'tard comes here claiming well the iHype sold more the first 3 days. The only people who can sign up for the G1 are current T Mobile customers, and people who are in 3G areas (You need to GO to the store to buy a G1 for those who aren't.).
The rest of us need to wait until the 22nd. :-(

You don't don't have to be in a 3G area to order the G1 but you do have to be a current T-mobile customer. I would also just like to say that I'm tired of people comparing the G1 to In the iphone. Touchscreen phones have been out for quite a while and apple is far from the first to use one (HTC, Palm). Just because your product has a touchscreen does not mean you are an iphone wannabe! HTC is better than iphone and they have been in the phone game a lot longer than overpriced, oooh what a pretty box apple ;)

Please tell me you're joking. iPhone's multitouch interface is light years ahead of anything by HTC.

1) I've used the HTC Diamond, and in every way, manner, shape and form, iPhone beats it Hands Down.

2) iPhone costs $199 and comes with 8GB storage. G1 costs $179.00 and comes with 1GB RAM

3) G1's data plan... if you go over 1Gig per month, the rest of your data traffic that month may be slowed down to a piddling 50kbps. So, before you get that G1 and plan to surf away, recognize that while, unlimited, T-Mobile apparently has no intention of letting you actually surf with any reasonable bandwidth after a certain point.

How original. . ."iHype." Did you come up with that one all by yourself?

Little sensitive about the comparison with the iPhone, aren't ya?

T-mobile announced a phone that won't hit the markets until mid-october, on a nearly non-existent 3G network. As a current T-mobile customer, I plan on waiting until it's available at the retail outlet. I have my hesitations concerning their requiring to add their data plan even though there is no network to really take advantage of it. Unfortunately, I can get unlimited slow data access now from T-mobile for a much lower price, they require me to signup for the higher price version. What gives T-mobile? I'll gladly pay for 3G access, but only after I *HAVE* 3G access.

Seriously Jonathan, I wouldn't even try to compare the G1 to the iPhone. No direct connect to your computer at the moment, and too much dependence on 'back end' synchronization. Only 8GB available after you install the highest capacity SD card. I still look forward to it, just with reservations...

You will be able to use a SD card higher then 8GB with a firmware upgrade.

you need to get your info straight and do your research before blurting out nonsense information....First the plan t-mobile is offering is including unlimited data/text messaging/Email/and all hotspot locations at a combined price that is $20 lower than if you added it to say a blackberry individually. Second, there is a 16gb microSD card that just came out so you arent limited to 8gb. Apple hype is ridiculous and i think they make terrible devices, with verrrry verrrrrry poor battery life. i Joined to ipod train and soon jumped off after using the device for less than a week.

It is too bad that the Android release is on Tmobile. I will NEVER EVER deal with that POS company again.

In fact I would rather use a tin can and string, I would rather use smoke signals, I would rather write a letter and depend on the post office, I would rather ride pony express thru 120 degree Arizona, I would sooner depend on my girl friend to answer the phone, I rather would depend on my neighbor to return my weed wacker, I would rather learn Morse code and string telegraph lines and most of all...

I would rather eat dirt than EVER deal with Tmobile again. Hopefully, Android will be available elsewhere soon.

the G1 doesn't require a higher data plan, people can't do simple math anymore. For example:

T-Mobile Dash - $14.99 a month for unlimited messaging and $20 a month for unlimited EDGE websurfing

or 4.99 a month for 400 messages and 19.99 a month for unlimited EDGE websurfing

G1 -$35 a month for unlimited 3g or EDGE websurfing and unlimited messaging or $25 a month for 400 messages and unlimited web.

see what I just did? Its the same price, you get 3g goodness for free!

If 50k=3G in your book, I'd hate to be your bookkeeper

Maybe because I have an older plan. But my mobile internet is only $6/month unlimited. My math skills tell me that $6 is less than $25. How about yours?

Personally, I'll wait. I see a better Android coming in the near future. I would also like to see Android field tested before i buy.

This article should probably be removed from the homepage as it may lead people to think that the phone's actually sold out. You may have gotten that message earlier but it was temporary. Not sure why but availability according to the link from my.tmobile has been intermittent since the launch. I was waiting until i qualified for the best upgrade price...just got one as well.

I would like to point out "ChrisLang" that all those mediums are not sufficient to transport the information that currently is transported by cellular devices. "While I do not know exactly what content was once carried in the smoke signals of American Indians, I can safely guess that it did not include philosophical argument. Puffs of smoke are insufficiently complex to express ideas on the nature of existence, and even if they were not, a Cherokee philosopher would run short of either wood or blankets long before he reached his second axiom. You cannot use smoke signals to do philosophy. Its form excludes the content." (Neil Postman - Amusing Ourselves to Death) Just because you dislike a certain company does not justify the act of attempting to use outdated mediums to relay information that otherwise would have been transported on wireless networks.

well they must have gotten more in because you can order one at this moment. I think this will turn out to be a pretty good phone yes it will have some set backs. When the iphone first came out it some set back also. I pre-ordered mines just like any other mobile service you get to test it out and if you dont like it you send it back no big deal.

I was excited about this for all of 12 seconds. I'm with T-Mobile and it seems to me that their prices are as competitive as they are cos T-Mobile are so technologically limited. On that note, I'll wait for the next generation of G-Phones. This one doesn't even record videos; a feature that's very important to me as I have a very active and spontaneous 4 y.o. and I love to capture those precious moments. I ain't goin' near this phone until it's been tried n' tested and the kinks are worked out.
