Samsung's SCH-3500 was one of the most popular Sprint PCS phones of all time. After following up that model with the more feature-rich SPH-N200, the company has introduced the SPH-N400, which has the bells and whistles its predecessors lacked, including a color display and a speakerphone, for a reasonable price of $179. Like the SPH-N200, the gray SPH-N400 shares the flip-up dial-pad cover that conjures up comparisons to the Star Trek Communicator. But upon closer inspection, you'll notice some improvements over the SPH-N200's design. For starters, the SPH-N400 weighs less (4 ounces) and is smaller (4.25 by 2.0 by 0.8 inches) than its predecessor. With the trimmer SPH-N400, we found it easier to dial numbers and navigate the phone's menu with just one hand via the joysticklike navigation button and dedicated Menu and Back buttons. It also fits better in the pocket of your shirt or pants.

Stick it to em': Slightly bigger than a pack of gum, but still quite pocketable.

Other changes include a larger, eight-line, 128x128 color LCD that really pops; a blue-illuminated, backlit keypad; and a clear plastic bar on top of the phone that lights up red when a call comes in, when you make a call, or when it's charging.

Samsung has added a speakerphone to the back of the mobile. To use this feature, check the right side of the phone and press a small silver button bearing a speaker icon. On the other side of the N400 is a two-way rocker button that controls volume. However, if you don't turn on the keypad lock, you can inadvertently turn off the ringer when the phone is in your pocket or loose in your purse.

Like other PCS Vision-enabled phones, the N400 lets you customize its look with downloadable graphics, pictures, and sounds, available as part of Sprint's next-generation data service. The wireless Web interface also looks jazzier, though it remains largely text oriented. (See the Performance section for more on the wireless Web features.)
As with many of Sprint's latest mobiles, the N400 is packed with features, including three-way calling, 20 ring tones, a vibrate mode, a calendar, a memo pad, an alarm, a countdown, a calculator, a world clock, voice-activated dialing, SMS, a 250-name phone book, and caller ID (when available).

Look ma no hands: The N400 comes with a speakerphone.

The N400 is also GPS ready for e911 services, and as one of Sprint's PCS Vision mobiles, it supports J2ME so that you can download ring tones, screensavers, and applications for a few dollars more. Some of the downloads are silly, while others are somewhat addictive. Better yet, you can go into a special "airplane" mode that allows you to play the games without having the cell radio on. This phone is compatible with Sprint's optional digital camera attachment so that you can take and send pictures from your mobile. We tested the N400 (CDMA 1900, 800/AMPS 800) in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area using Sprint PCS service and found call quality to be above par. Calls were clear, and callers said that they couldn't tell we were using a cell phone. When we turned on the speakerphone feature, callers said they didn't even know we were using a cell phone, let alone a speakerphone.

One complaint about the wireless Web experience: Though Sprint's 3G network is supposed to make surfing the wireless Web quicker, we didn't notice much of a speed boost. To be clear, the lag time isn't long, but we expected it to disappear with the new 1xRTT data network.

As for battery life, we managed to meet the phone's rated talk time of 2.9 hours and standby time of 7 days. We appreciated that Samsung ditched the desktop charger that was available with the N200 in favor of the compact travel-sized charger.

Hit the road: this compact charger won't take up a lot of room in a bag.

Few Pros, Many Cons

Pros: Sharp screen, nice button backlighting

Cons: Inconsistent signal quality, difficult to see screen unless backlit, slow browser, lock-ups, distorted audio

Review: My wife and I have purchased the same phone with a new Sprint PCS plan. Both of us have experienced the same problems. I have talked with ohers who also have the phone and have similar problems.

My wife and I could be sitting within 5 feet of each other while she would have 4 bars of service and I am on roam (or vice versa).

It sometimes takes 3 to 4 tries to get the browser to connect.

We are both on our third "extended life" battery in two years. Our phones maintain a charge for around 2 hours with no use or 15 minutes of use.

While charging through the day (powered ON), my wife will come home and say "Why didn't you answer the phone? I tried calling you 3 times!" The phone never rang and shows no missed calls. There would be no voicemail indication. Calling into voicemail would cause the indicator to come on. After making a call and hanging up, sometimes it would then show the missed call from hours earlier. Sometimes, the phone will beep and show a missed call/voicemail from DAYS earlier.

Flipping the phone closed sometimes causes the phone to power off. If the cover does not flip completely, the backlight stays on causing the battery to drain.

The only case that we found made specifically for the phone does not protect the earpiece which now has numerous scratches. It also has a belt "pivot" which is annoying as the phone is top heavy. While clipped to the belt, it will often twist upside down as I sit and stand. Then, the earpiece will catch on a chair or something and flip open. Not only does this cause battery drain, it also looks stupid to be walking around with an upside down, open phone attached to one's belt.

Although we have compared the settings of both phones, my wife is unable to place calls while on roam. I do not have this problem. We have checked the roam call-block feature of both phones as well as the network selection.

Reception on a cloudy day is awful. I could be in my apartment (located arond 150 yards from the primary beltway of a major metropolitan area) and have no signal all day yet a full signal on a clear day.

Calls drop at random.

My wife has recently replaced her phone with a Sanyo model and has no problems with it at all (so far).

EXCELLENT PHONE on the contrary to others opinions.

Pros: Brilliant color display, alarm, calculator, ect. REALLY COOL, Joystick,; to many to say in one line.

Cons: DOSEN'T HAVE VOICE MEMO!!!

Review: I am about to buy this phone. I have more than 3 friends who have this phone. I am always using theirs for the great games and features. I have never in my life heard of this phone freezing from one of my friends. THe only thing about thid phone that annyos me is that I need the voice memo. I am always coming up with new song ideas and i need to record all of the lyrics. That is the only problem. But I have still purchased the phone and it will be here on tuesday.

This is a pretty good phone however it still has things that need to be fixed.

OWNED FOR 2 YEARS AND PRETTY MUCH JUNK

Pros: COLOR DISPLAY WITH TIME

Cons: FREEZE UP, DROPED CALLS, BAD RECEPTION

Review: I OWNED THIS PHONE FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS NOW AND I CAN SAY I SHARE MY FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE REST OF THE USERS. I TO SUFFER FROM PHONE FREEZEING WHICH HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY ON BOOT UP OR WHEN TURNING IT OFF AND THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS BY TAKING THE BATTERY OFF AND REPLACE IT. I GET DROPED CALLS WEEKLY AND RECEPTION HAS TO BE BY THE WINDOW WITH THE ANTENNA UP TO WORK WHERE I LIVE BUT THAT COULD BE DUE TO WHERE I LIVE WHICH IS A HOLE. MANY TIMES I HAVE FOUND THAT THE LITTLE JOY STICK HAS CLICKED ON THE VISION SERVICE ALL BY IT'S SELF WHIH COULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE IF A USER IS NOT ON A UNLIMITED VISION PLAN LIKE MYSELF. I DIDENT RELAZIZE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE HERE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUES AS MYSELF. MANY TIMES I HAVE COME CLOSE BUT STOPED MY SELF FROM SMASHING THE PHONE. I GUESS I JUST LEARNED TO LIVE WITH IT BUT I PLAN ON GETTING A DIFFERENT PHONE NOW KNOWING THINGS COULD BE MUCH BETTER.

The Worst Phone In The History of Cell Phones

Pros: The phone looks nice, has a great screen and screen saver, and cool blue backlighting.

Cons: The point of a phone is to make phone calls, and if you can't do that with it, there really is no point. The sound is bad, it doesn't hold a charge long, eventually the charger port will break and you won't be able to charge it. The speaker phone is che

Pros: Has everything you need in a basic phone. I never had the "freezing" problem that I see on a lot of other reviews. The LCD screen is nice and large and the button pattern is good. An all-around good phone.

Pros: Compared to the other cellphones I have used, the phone is very ergonomic; although finding numbers could be better. Calendar and alarm functions are easy to use; and the 24-time zone function is also on-target.

Pros: It has a lot of cool features (speakerphone, loud ringers, big screen, blue backlight). It's also good at blocking out background noise.

I love my 2nd N400 as I loved the 1st!

Pros: It fits a 6' man's hand. It's the only non-bulky phone with a speakerphone, which works greatly. Fully-featured for those who don't want to take pictures - like me. Can be attached to a small camera if one wants to rake pictures. Buttons sized for someone

Cons: Yes, the phone freezes sometimes, but only if you don't respect some 5-10 seconds before using it after a battery charge time. Take the battery out and back in and it's OK. (This is my second one; I smashed the first one by accident.)

Cons: It will freeze up from time to time (removing and replacing the battery is an easy work-around), and battery life isn't so hot (but not horrible). The worst problem, however is the horrible reception. I lived near the bottom of a hill for a year, and (un

Pros: Yeah, it's got the color screen, speaker phone, ring tones, it's cute and fuzzy and blah, blah, blah...

Cons: First N400 I had started acting up when I'd try to charge it. Had to play with the power cord to get it to work. Finally went KA-PUT! (within 6 months of purchase NEW) Refurbished is going the same way.(had this for less than 2 months) I'm hoping the A5

Pros: Speaker phone Cheap But it is absoultely not worth the price. You pay for what you are getting. In fact, you can even say that you are not going to get your investment back, since you are probably going to have to buy a new phone shortly.

Cons: Broke - it constantly dropped calls. Had to get one refurbished and that broke also - this time it was the contrast. Battery life last only about 1 hr of talk. Probably one of the most unreliable phones you can get in the market. If people express pos

Do Not Buy This Phone!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can't tell you how much I hate this phone. Battery life now barely lasts a day. If the phone is fully charged and I unplug it for one second it takes 30 minutes for it to charge again! The speakerphone is horrible too. It's a nice feature, but it's not nice when everytime you answer a call it comes on and you can't turn it off. I press the button to turn it off and it says it's off but it's still on! After pressing the button for at least 10 times the speaker is still on! I have to ask the caller to call me back and hope that it doesn't come on again. Signal strength is horrible. The phone always roams in places that previous phones had gotten coverage. The other features are ok, but what would really make them better is if the phone actually worked as a phone.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After 6 months (and my 3rd n400!) I just couldn't take the poor reception, missed calls, no service. Co-worker's N400s are equally poor. Also, screen is hard to see in sunlight, speakerphone is only fair, and acts up sometimes. Phone locks up occasionally. I wanted to like it, but in the end, I got a Sanyo 4900, and reception is awesome!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was kind of disappointed when I saw the lack of options that came with this phone. Some of the games must be paid before use and all the cool stuff is for the pcs-vision. The only reason I bought the phone was because i got it half off. I got the phone for basic so it works good for that.

Excellent phone, especially for $49.99!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased this phone at RadioShack recently for $49.99 and it is an excellent buy. The reception is good, but Sprint does need a few more towers. I figure that will come in the future. The battery life is good for a color phone. I get about 2-2.5 day standby time depending on usage. People need to realize that this is a color phone, the battery life will be less than non-color phones. The color LCD requires more power to run it. Anyway, I definately recommend this phone to anyone.

Great, reliable phone with extra's.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Good: Everything you get, color screen, flip style that has the LARGEST color CID screen available. However, it's one of the weakest pixel displays of the current phones. Pros:

Cons:

Review: After reading all of the comments, I have to consider myself lucky. I travel extensively and have no problem with battery life. I do bring the wall and car charger with me on trips, but what do you expect for a 4000 minute a month user??? I love the phone, service has not failed me once in 5 months, and I can use it at home where AT&T was non-existent.

I hate this phone and the service provider!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The phone is like an old pc, it's slow to pull up numbers etc.. and it freezes on me all the time. I have to pop the battery off the back in order to restart it. Drops calls all the time (that is probably Sprints crappy service), getting the text messages (Sprint's rediculous web-based short mail, it's not text messaging, it's e-mailing) takes forever. I am over Sprint and thier aweful service. There are a few redeeming qualities of the phone but not enough that I would buy it again.

Good phone, but battery life is awful

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like most things about this phone. My one complaint is my experience with the battery life hasn't been pleasant. I charge the batter overnight, and it claims to be fully charged by the time I take it off the charger. Yet not even 8 hours later, the phone is dead. I've only had the phone for about 2 months. Read The Manual

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i didn't want to review this phone until i have used it for some decent amount of time which has been 3 months now. battery life is not very stellar but i knew that when i bought the phone. in fact, most color phones do not get very good battery life but this can be solved by either buying and extended battery, travel or car charger or by turning off the gps location sensor which will significantly increase the battery life. i have not had any problem with the speaker phone function. the phone did freeze on me once but hey, so does my computer. the phone is not without any flaws but if you read the manual you will find a wealth of information to help you use the phone properly. the manual can be found on sprint's website in adobe format and is very useful. there are also tons of sites to get ringers and free wallpapers and even games without charge. i upgraded from an sanyo 4900 and have not regretted the decision. reception is very good and signal strength is 1 bar less than the sanyo but i notice no difference in being able to hold a signal and have not had any dropped calls. all in all it's a good solid phone. not the best but good.

HORRIBLE battery life

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a pretty phone, nice screen, nice graphics, nice bells-and-whistles. But the battery sucks and goes out after 1 day of using the phone for incoming and outgoing calls (total call time <1h/day). The moving fish "wallpaper" uses a lot of energy. Because it's a small phone with a small battery to begin with, it simply cannot support all the graphics programmed for this unit. I use this phone for my job running between hospitals, answering pages, and by the end of the day, especially if I accidentally leave the phone turned on in the car in the parking garage or in the hospital, the battery is toast. I have to fully recharge the phone every night. And any time I am in a larger building where there is difficulty getting a signal, the battery dies within an hour or two because it searches endlessly for a signal -- a function this battery does not support very long. This means I have to be cognizant of turning the phone on and off to save energy throughout my working day. A major inconvenience. It's a pretty phone and has a nice screen on which you can see incoming calls to screen what you answer, however, the battery makes the rest of one's enjoyment of the SPH-N400 bittersweet. Had I known this would be the sorry climax, I would have returned the phone prior to two weeks use. And, of course, Sprint has given me the bogus runaround about how it's my imagination or my misuse, not the phone's lousy battery. Only through CNET have I discovered that my frustrations are not singular.

I really, really wanted to like it....

Pros:

Cons:

Review: ...but it ended up disappointing me time after time. The reviewers claim a long battery life, however in my experience the battery lasts no more than 2 days, less if you make or receive any calls. I don't know about you, but one of the main characteristics I look for in a long term cell phone is a battery that I can have confidence in. I want to be able to go away for a weekend and not have to worry about charging it or even worse, shutting it down to conserve energy. Very disappointed in this phone. Try another one of Samsung's products, which are usually spectacular. Better yet, switch to a different carrier (Sprint bites) and get a better phone.

Good phone ok service

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The phone itself it a cool looking phone, it has a decent ammount of memory for the price, and call clarity it ok, not near as good as sprint likes to hype themselves up as having. The phone did freeze on me once, i had to remove the battery to fix it. And battery life is HORRIBLE, if you use the phone alot you will be constantly charging it, id say it has maybe 1 day standbye time on a full charge. Drop the price $20-30 and you have a amazing phone for the price, but as is its just slightly better then average

Freezes...but

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this phone the monthh it came out. As soon as I got it connected, it would freeze all the time. So I took advantage of the 14 day return policy at sprint stores. I kept taking the n400 back and getting completly brand new ones until I got one that didn't freeze. Finally, 3 phones and 2 weeks after buying the first phone, I got one that didn't freeze, and hasn't frozen once since then (almost 10 months). So take advantage of the initial return policy. If you get a bad phone, you will know it with in the first 2 days of service, and then take it back. If you get a phone that works, you will have one of the most wonderful phones every sold!!! I highly recomend it.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, let me say that I really like this phone. Features, the screen is really nice, the size is decent...however there is a problem. The battery life is TERRIBLE!! They claim 7 days of standby time - well let me tell you, this is a lie! Without making or taking calls I get roughly 2.5 days of standby time! I tried to return it after a month's use, but they wouldn't take it back, and told me I should go to a Sprint service center to find out if there was a problem with it. Turns out there is a problem with the model that Samsung knows about. They are trying to come up with some sort of software fix, but I'm not counting on it anytime soon. Do not let anyone tell you different. I read the mixed reviews here and decided to buy anyway - it was a mistake, and now it can't be undone. Again, this COULD be a nice phone, but with that sorry battery life, it renders itself useless if you are away from a charger. When i go away for the weekend, I end up turning it off half the time, and I'm afraid to make any calls, in case I need it for emergency purposes. For those that have this phone, please call samsung and bug them to get this software fix out - the number is 1-800-samsung.

The wireless web on my home desktop computer has not worked right for four months. Sprint even changed my phone number thinking that would fix it. CONTACT SAMSUNG, Help Yourselves

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you are having a lot of problems with your Samsung N400 help make sure that Samsung does not screw you by releasing a new version of the phone and denying problems with the old one (Like they did with the Samsung A400, they just replaced the defective A400 with the A460, I used to work at Best Buy, and we got soo many A400 back and Samsung immediately discontinued it and screwed the owners of the A400). Go to http://www.samsungtelecom.com/contact_us/contact_us2.asp and report the problem to Samsung and tell them to do something about it. If the site asks to install a Korean font just click cancel. Also make complaints to your local BBB and to the government. The phone has been out for a long time and they still have not fixed the multiple defects like the phone freezing, very week signals compared to other phones, ringer not going off, calls being skipped due to freezing, auto changes in ringer volume. They need to admit their mistake and replace or fix our phones.

Poor design, quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The worst problem was that I had to hard-reset/remove the battery three times in the first week. The 'joystick' seemed a good idea but is too small and prone to hitting the wrong way, screen lighting is poor, and the phone just plain feels like a toy. I took it back after a week and got the Samsung SPH-A500 which has been great.
